Luna is a truly unique beast. As is our way of taking traditional things that we love and admire and adding our own modern flare, Luna is a contemporary take on classical instrument forms like the violin or the cello.

The Back

We believe that one of the important, but often overlooked aspects, of guitar design is the back. The back is where the instrument meets the player. Its an important consideration to ensure that the instruments sits well and is comfortable for the end user. Luna is carved by hand with subtle convex curves and deep rounds to make the instrument feel natural when played. There is also a deep carve virtually removing the heel and allowing easy upper fret access.

The Head

Another aesthetic tribute to classical instruments is the open faced peghead. Not only does this approach satisfy our desire to play with negative space in instrument design, but it's also very functional and allows us to use virtually any standard tuning machine.

Design

Luna was born out of the basic lines and curves employed in traditional luthiery. Heavily inspired from violins and cellos, this model borrows aesthetically from those stringed instruments but reimagines them, keeping the guitar player in mind. The lower bout is inset to allow for a classical playing position, and the lower horn is changed to a single-cut to allow for the players fretting hand to better reach the upper frets. It pays tribute to its inspirational sources where possible, and breaks away where needed to fulfill its role as a modern guitar.

The Block

Probably one of the more visually striking aspects of the Luna model is what we call the Tuning Block. As a visual nod to violins and cellos, it was important to us, to have fine adjustment tuners on this design. While not necessary for tuning, these are entirely functional 4/4 cello tuners available to use as needed.

Since these are for use on a guitar, the need for the instrument to be thinner necessitated a design where the fine tuners are inset in the body. However, we didnt want inset hardware to affect reparability. Thus we designed a modular, removable block that the tuners are installed onto and then dropped into the guitar body.

The Carves

Of course Luna could not draw inspiration from classical instruments without employing deep archtop carves. This is no basic block guitar hit with a round-over bit. This is a heavily chambered and hand carved beauty with all the sweeping curves and organic scoops we could fit into its compact form.
